These industrial sites were built to accommodate the brand new organic cotton spinning technology that was developed by Richard Arkwright in the 18th century. They soon became the model for factories throughout the world. The power to run these machines was supplied by the Derwent River. Derwent, and they were often constructed alongside other cotton mills. The site was eventually absorbed by the city of modern Derbyshire.
